Established in 2003, Astronaut Kawada Architecture is an architectural and design practice with offices in London and Tokyo. We are interested in the exploration, proposition and delivery of provocative architecture.

The principles of our work concentrate around interpretation of 'place', 'context', 'function' and 'people'. Substance is provided through sensory invention, manipulation of light and space, and the articulation of material, composition and memory, encouraging new conceptions of surroundings.

We are driven by individual response to each challenge that we are given. There is no inherent style, but our ideas are generated by a process of free exploration and rigorous response, with the intention of creating a fresh and stimulating solution to each brief.

Our past experiences and evolving ambitions encompass broad interests from the most humble object that may fit in your hand, to a building that surrounds you, to a complete vista that you gaze upon. Our emerging diversity of work reflects this, from a door handle, to lighting, to furniture, to installation, to individual dwelling, to multiple dwellings, to community facilities, to arts spaces, to museums, to landscape and cityscape.

This diversity is also reflected in the way our studio works, on two sides of the world, yet with a common spirit. We enjoy the mix of conversations, encounters and ideas that this often brings, whether in Europe, Japan, or anywhere else. We relish the discourse that is generated, whether through teaching, which is an active part of the practice, discussions with clients, visionaries, makers, or the person in the street.
